Stress-Free Moving and Packing Tips

One of the least exciting parts about finding your new home might have to be moving. Moving can be as easy or as difficult as you want it to be, but that depends on how you decide to do things and how organized you are. We know what it’s like to move from one place to another and want to help you save time, effort, and money in the process. Here’s our list of top moving and packing tips that are guaranteed to make the daunting process as stress-free as possible.

Get rid of unnecessary belongings

When moving out, you might not want to pack unnecessary items that you can’t see yourself using in the future. Treat the moving process as a fresh start. As you prepare to pack each item into a box, ask yourself if you’ve used it in the past month or year. If your answer is yes, you should definitely keep it. If not, put it into a separate box for giving away or donating. Getting rid of things doesn’t necessarily mean throwing them away, consider organizations that you can donate them to. Search for different organizations or nearby donation drop-offs online and label one of your boxes with its name. Knowing that your unwanted items could make a difference for someone else can make the process of getting rid of things easier and more meaningful.

Label and spray your boxes

If this is your first time moving, you might find this to be a gamechanger. If this is not your first time, but it has been a while since your last move, then here’s your gentle reminder: Label all of your boxes. This will save you a lot of time once you start furnishing your home. Labeling is an easy thing to forget to do if you find yourself wanting to get through everything as quickly as possible. You don’t want all your boxes to arrive at your new house and have to open each of them to figure out which room they should be in. There are different ways to approach labeling your boxes. You can be more general by having one for donating, one for trash, and one for keeping. We recommend packing things according to the room they belong in so you can have the box brought to each room directly by movers.

An additional tip for your boxes: If your boxes are cardboard, spray them with roach spray before packing to keep the pests away.

Hire professionals to be time-efficient

As enjoyable and budget-friendly it might be to have your friends or family help you move boxes out, consider the professionals that could get the job done faster and more efficiently. Some movers can guarantee that the job will be done within 3 hours, which could be significantly shorter than going between chatting and moving with your friends. Be sure to check reviews and hire a trusted service, your belongings are precious to you and they should be treated with care. Be sure to mark which boxes might have fragile objects to make it easier for the mover.

Do the prep work

Everything we have listed so far should be part of your plan for a successful move. Lay the groundwork for how you’re going to expedite the process by creating a thoughtful plan, checklist, or even a note in your phone that lists all the things you have to do before the big move-in date. If you decide to hire a moving company or have cleaners work on the house before you move in, book them early. You could find lower prices by booking in advance and might even be more motivated to start the moving process earlier as well. You should also update your address for all accounts and subscriptions as soon as the new house is yours.

Wrap your furniture

This could be very straightforward depending on how you want to do it, but here are a few tips on how to do it “correctly.” Consider your objects and determine how best to wrap them. Your safest tools are bubble wrap and plastic sheeting, which can be used to wrap wood pieces or padded furniture, respectively. Bubble wrap is particularly great for keeping your mirrors or glass objects safe. If you want another layer of protection for your furniture to prevent scratches while moving, place corrugated cardboard pieces in between wood furniture. If you want to keep the whole process more simple, then you can also use blankets to cover up your furniture, but be sure to vacuum them once they arrive at your new house.

Pack the essentials separately

Moving can be simple, but with all of the variables involved it can also be an opportunity for disaster to strike. Before you move-in, you should prepare to have all your everyday essentials with you. This might include a pair of clothes, toiletries, medication, important documents, etc. Place all of these items into a separate bag for you to bring along on the travel to your new home. Carrying all of these items separately can be the difference between frantically calling the moving company about the delayed boxes or having sound sleep despite circumstances beyond your control.
